Profile Information

About myself:
Not as humble as Buddha might like.
My experience with PEPY involved:
A pretentious cowboy, invoking the spirit of Ron Burgundy, doing something different everyday, riding around Phnom Penh on Captain Stag, running the Gun Shop with 'Hawk, a lifestyle devoid of socks, etc. etc.
My favorite PEPY memories are:
Visits to the schools and interacting with PEPY kids of course, but also dinner in a treehouse, meeting Kong Nay and the instrument maker, mountain biking around Angkor Wat, cruising PP on two wheels, and the great energy of Chez PEPY,
Since my time with PEPY, I have been:
exuberant
My plans for the future include:
life as an expat?
I am inspired by:
These tremendous PEPY folks, my parents, outside fun time (i.e. hiking biking snow/wakeboarding fly-fishing etc.), Hemingway, Dr. Paul Farmer, musicians (I have no talent myself), the possibility of a soul-mate, the kindness of strangers, writing, and the first few hours of the day when my mind is clear.

Population, Education, and the Environment

The following article was published in the January 2008 PEPY Newsletter
by Mandy Gatewood

“The growth in population is very much bound up with poverty, and in turn poverty plunders the earth. When human groups are dying of hunger, they eat everything: grass, insects, everything. They cut down the trees, they leave the land dry and bare. All other concerns vanish. That’s why in the next thirty years the problems we callContinue

Pointing the Finger in the Mirror

This article was published in the January 2008 PEPY Newsletter.

written by Michael Woodard

“We as people, even though it may seem insignificant, need to start taking small steps towards change. Everyday we should be doing something that means something, because if everybody does a little something then the whole begins to shift.”

It is simple truths like this from Mickey Sampson, the founder of Rural Development International,… Continue

I'm Dreaming of a Cambodian Christmas

lyrics by PEPY Participants, Julia Cullinan (9) and Maria Anthony (10)

i'm dreaming of a Cambodian Christmas
not like the other ones i've known
where the tonle sap glistens
and children listen
to hear the million roosters crow

i'm dreaming of a Cambodian Christmas
with all the tuk-tuks on the street
with pigs on motos
and polaroid photos
and horns honking all the time

i'm dreaming of a Cambodian Christmas
with floatin… Continue

Huge props to Portland - completely recommend a stint in the city of roses though I'm highly considering a life as a snowbird (here in the summers, away in the winters)...I do have these animals, though. Have you ever traveled with cats? Not so hot. Not at all. Houseplants don't do so well either. Where are you? Where are you from?

I miss you so much, but I can't wait to meet with you in one of the three bars in Hazard, KY this summer.

It's raining A LOT here. You'd love the storm -- gales of wind and big plunking rain.

Have a great trip!
