Profile Information

About myself:
I love my quarter-life crisis. (Yes, I plan to make it to 96!)

A native Kentuckian, I arrived in Phnom Penh after having taught English in a high school in a Muslim minority region of western China. I count amongst my most rewarding experiences teaching English to refugee adults in Kentucky and cycling the Karakoram Highway from the border of Pakistan to Kashgar, China. I joined PEPY for six months as an intern and led the Southern Cambodia Cycling Adventure before going to grad school for International Women’s Public Health.
My experience with PEPY involved:
managing donor & sponsor relations, monitoring and evaluation of PEPY's educational projects, making cinnamon-vanilla-coffee iceshakes in the kitchen, writing thank-yous and making cards, playing on the PEPY People Network NING site an awful lot!
My favorite PEPY memories are:
being blown away by dancing and violin at the North Korean restaurant in Phnom Penh, cycling hundreds of miles of rural red-dirt-road Cambodia, being a part of the day-to-day operation of The PEPY Ride, Phnom Penh's boat festival, getting my mojo back in Kep, and living with the incomparable PEPY Ride team!
Since my time with PEPY, I have been:
interning, studying Khmer, eating awesome Khmer food every day, learning a ton from PEPY and from the amazing PEPY staff & interns, journaling, reading and educating myself more, drinking entirely too many coffee iceshakes, and biking around town and outside of town
My plans for the future include:
graduate school in Public Health (focusing on women in post-conflict zones) at Berkeley.
I am inspired by:
everyone at PEPY, Islamic feminism, Will Oldham, PEPY, RDIC, www.feministing.com, Malcolm X, Shirin Ebadi, really good cooking, refugees such as Darfurian Salaheldin Hamed in Lexington KY, the artistic mindset, Dennis Kucinich, Amy Goodman & Juan Gonzales at Democracy Now! (dot org), Cradle to Cradle, Kathleen Hanna, Saul Williams...

The Global Food Crisis, "Free" Markets, and Neo-Liberalism

Here at PEPY, we've been following the worldwide food crisis really carefully and sending articles back and forth about the reasons behind the crisis and what can be done.

I find it really strange that, in every one of these articles I've read, no one has ever advocated the West cutting down on our enormous appetite for meat, but blames China and the developing world for expanding th… Continue

Happy Khmer New Year!!!

Sok sapbai ch’num t’mai! Happy Khmer New Year!

It’s the Year of the Rat, which heralds the birth of industrious, adaptable, ambitious children for many Asian communities. In Cambodia, the royal fortune teller makes predictions about the coming year. This year, he foresaw a failed crop and food shortages for the poor, while the government officials will have a victorious year in every endeavor. Under no circumstances should anyone get married this year, so lovebirds should hold off until next Ap… Continue

PEPY needs your help!

Hello PEPY People!

We need your help!

We are very excited to be entrants in the National Geographic Ashoka's Changemakers Geotourism Challenge: Celebrating Places, Changing Lives. This is a global competition to recognize innovators in geotourism, defined as tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of the place being visited - its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents. Ashoka has created this competition so that it awards $5,000 to… Continue

Tough questions on the way to Angkta Som

So. Setting the scene. We left Phnom Penh before 6:30am. The sun was just rising over the 4-story buildings as we cycled out of town -- past the VERY dangerous roundabout that heralds the end of the city proper and onto the thin stripe of asphalt that would take us to the sea. Or, that night, to Chouk. The day before, we had cycled on dirt roads around mango plantations. The mangoes hung thick and soft from the trees, weighting the branches. The homes were organic and impermanent. We often cycle… Continue

Hi, PEPY friends! Sok sabai ch'num t'may! (Or in English, Happy New Year!)

Miss you heaps already as well. The young people in LA seemed completely disinterested in anything happening outside of LA. Meh!

Finally arrived to NC last night, so nice to be home in the calm of Gurley Holler in Yancey County. So peaceful and quiet here! Yeah!

I look forward to our meeting in Hazard....

Tech should totally move in to the GunShop with you, at least for a little while. By the time I get back I bet you'd both be pumping iron, talking football, having beer chugging contests, and farting on eachother. You know, man stuff.
