I want to add, based on a question from a friend, that I do not mean to say that all of our job tasks need to be of the "warm fuzzy" kind for the passion-for-the-cause-leading-to-good-decision-making line of thought to work. This applies to accoun...

Profile Information

About myself:
I love PEPY. I love to travel. I love to ride my bike from one place to the next (no "out and back" rides here please). I love the atmosphere of Cambodia, the hope, the people, the energy, the heat (sometimes!). Cold is not so bad either - I also love snowboarding, the sound of powder flattening under your board as you go off the trail or the sound of skis with edges vibrating on newly groomed snow, like riding on a massage chair through the wintery forest. I love adventures and water and mountains and any combination of the above as long as it doesn't involve buffalo leeches. And did I mention, I like to ride my bicycle...?
My experience with PEPY involved:
working with FABULOUS people who inspire and challenge me to learn and be a better me every day.
My favorite PEPY memories are:
every time we take students to the temples, the very first PEPY trip to Chanleas Dai, hanging out in Chez PEPY with the coolest most passionate team and realizing that it is not where you are but who you are with that makes a top 10 day, watching some of the first Child-to-Child club meetings, the very first time we played the garbage pick-up game at the PEPY school and even more so two years later when we realized how clean the school grounds had become, swimming in phosphorescents, staying in the jungle at an adventure park in Preah Vihear
Since my time with PEPY, I have been:
PEPYing. I didn't think this was going to be my job, nor my passion. I didn't plan to stay. But, how could I leave? We still have a lot to learn and ways we can improve and with such a passionate team and potential for positive impact, it's hard to think of giving my time elsewhere. So, in short, I've been busy but loving it.
My plans for the future include:
professional kite surfing -or- working at a job where I feel inspired daily, feel like I'm "making a difference" at SOMETHING, something IMPORTANT hopefully, with passionate people who I love, in a place that inspires.
I am inspired by:
Natural born teachers, including my mom!
The power of the wind and the ocean
Homemade bread
Great singers
People who are passionate enough to follow their dreams and delusional enough to think they can achieve them
People who smile, even in times of uncertainty

YOU! All of the people who have joined our PEPY tours, volunteered here in Cambodia, and supported our work. These past three years I feel like I have been near overload with amazing people - inspiring me to try to be more like them in so many ways, from Mickey with his integrity, creative problem solving, and commitment, to Maryann with her leadership, compassion, and drive, volunteers who come on trips and then draw out their best skills from Steph fixing the school desks to Yukiko's art and her way of drawing out the artist and creativity in those around her. I'm inspired by our staff here, Channeang's patience in the classroom and her ability to bring out the creativity in her students, Aline's belief in the power of communities to act as one and control their own futures, Channy's laugh... I am inspired by you.... and that's why I'm here :-)

1000% increase

Wow! Check it out! We gave out 106 bikes year year for the fourth installment of our Bike-to-School Program.

This year, we have nearly 100% increase in students graduating from grade six since we started PEPY and nearly 1000% increase in the number of kids completing grade seven. A huge factor in that is that the junior high school programs are now much closer to the student's homes thanks to so many of you.

Yeah!… Continue

NGO Program Success as the new Stock Market (dividends paid in "warm fuzzies")

“If you are somehow involved in aid work and receive any form of compensation, the fact is that you benefit.” – I think we are missing the discussion about the MAIN way we benefit, and if we miss that, than maybe we shouldn’t be here.

Love for our staff

I wrote a comment today on our Geotourism Challenge site which I wanted to share: http://geotourism.changemakers.com/en-us/node/21932

It seems that a lot of people have been voting for PEPY on the site (THANK YOU!) and some have also gone so far as to write nice comments for us on our page. I was writing back to one from Aileen Cameron and I wanted to share it below.

Thank you to the PEPY… Continue

Hi Sweetie. I don't know how I joined the network but I guess I did a while ago. Since you wrote to me (out of the blue), I thought I'd put up my old lady picture. I don't know what happened to Mom who was supposed to call after she finished bank stuff for your audit. Next week we're going to MSG for Pete Seeger's "90th birthday bash" for Clear Water. Hope I see you this summer....will I??
