Born and raised in Austin, Texas, I graduated from a small liberal arts school with a BA in English and Japanese Studies in 2006 and promptly hopped a plane for Kumamoto prefecture, Japan, as a JET! I love the arts, reading, writing, and music (I play the clarinet and the shakuhachi, a traditional Japanese bamboo flute).... basically everything that won't fund my other love, which is travel. Go figure...
I also enjoy fishing, swimming, exploring and trying weird foods!
In high school I spent two spring breaks working at an orphanage in Juarez, Mexico. The experience was life-changing and since then I have sought out opportunities to make an impact. I'm really excited about my first PEPY tour, it's coming up so fast!
My experience with PEPY involved:
The upcoming 2008 March Rural Experiential Tour
My plans for the future include:
Finding work as a writer, going to art school, continuing to learn and grow as I travel...
I am inspired by:
People who are unafraid to throw themselves out there and be all that they can be.

Wow, Bren, you's a...doll! Had so much fun hopping around with you ladies last week. Already settled back into the staff room, reminiscing about Cambodia, thinking about those kids and organizations and plotting my next adventures and volunteer opps. Hope I can stop by on the way to Yakushima next month and safe travels!
Dear Brenna - I think you can try most things so long as there is a native teacher available to help. There was one couple who did a shopkeeping activity with flash cards and items for sale that went down well, and there is usually space at the front of the classroom for moving around. The songs I taught were 'I'm a little teapot' and 'Row, row, row your boat', and I'm happy to do those again, but I would love to the traditional Japanese folk song 'Sakura'. Do you know that?
I love your note on inspiration... more power to that! I'm a JET, too, in Hyogo Prefecture (near Kobe). Really looking forward to our experience and meeting all you guys next week. You getting ready for the trip?
Hi Brenna - I think I've been paired with you for the visit to the PEPY Friends School. I was a JET in Saga Prefecture twenty years ago, and now live and work in Tokyo. I remember being fascinated by shakuhachi after hearing it for the first time at a wedding and even got as far as buying one from an old man who was making them from metal tubes, I think. Anyway, I am now thinking of what on earth I can teach at the school. When I went to the PEPY Ride School near Siem Reap, I taught some songs as well as talking about where I came from. Cambodia is an amazing place. You'll love it. Daniel
