"By January 1860 he had reached the town of Battambang, near the edge of a great freshwater lake, the Tonle Sap. ...Moving north, both by canoe and on foot through the dense forests, they finally reached a broad moat surrounding a temple. Mouhot stood on a raised stone platform from which a causeway crossed the moat to the main entrance. Directly ahead almost half a mile stood an immense stone building with five oddly shaped towers: the Temple of Angkor, Angkor Wat.
Mouhot did not know that he was looking at the largest religious monument in the world. He racked his imagination for comparison in Western civilizations. Angkor Wat, he wrote later, was "a rival to [the temple] of Solomon, and erected by some ancient Michelangelo.... It is grander than anything left to us by Greece or Rome, and presents a sad contrast to the state of barbarism in which the nation is now plunged." Michael Freeman and Roger Warner, Angkor.

Well it’s all right, if you live the life you please
Well it’s all right, doing the best you can
Well it’s all right, as long as you lend a hand"
